Queer Histories
Creative workshops for LGBTQIA+ young people exploring queer history through art, delivered in partnership with Cheshire Dance and Chester Pride.
Who? For LGBTQIA+ young people 14-25 living in Chester
What do they get out of it? A deeper understanding of queer history and queer art, an opportunity to create art and exhibit at Chester Pride.
Year One: Queer Art and Activism
Workshop 1: Queer Art History and Creative Response
Participants explored the work of influential queer artists including Keith Haring and Gluck, discussing how artists have used visual culture to express identity, protest injustice, and build community.
Following the discussion, participants created their own artwork responding to the themes explored in the session.
Selected artworks were later exhibited at Chester Pride 2023.
Workshop 2: Collaborative Doodle Session at Youth Pride
A drop-in creative session held during the Youth Pride area of Chester Pride. Visitors were invited to view the artworks created in the earlier workshop and contribute to a large collaborative drawing.
The activity encouraged informal participation, creative confidence, and connection between young LGBTQIA+ attendees.
Year Two: Archives, Portraiture and Creative Wellbeing
Workshop 1: Queer Archives and Portrait Drawing
Participants explored queer material from the Cheshire Archives and Local Studies collection before taking part in a guided portrait drawing session.
The workshop introduced basic portraiture techniques while encouraging participants to reflect on how identity and history can be represented through art.
Workshop 2: Creative Wellbeing Painting Session
A relaxed painting session focused on creative expression and wellbeing. Participants were encouraged to experiment with colour and imagery in a supportive environment, allowing them to explore personal themes and reconnect with creativity without pressure.
